Your Clear Coat Protects Your Paint, But What Protects Your Clear Coat?

Since the 1980s, vehicles manufactured in the U.S. are built with a clear coat that protects the paint. Your clear coat takes the brunt of flying road debris, scratches, streaks, and etches that bombard the exterior of your vehicle every day. Over time, that clear coat gets worn and scarred so the brilliance of your paint can't break through. Oxidation occurs when your vehicle has not been regularly waxed or protected by a sealant. Because oxidation is a chemical process and scratches are a physical manifestation of many brutal external factors, no amount of cleaning or polishing will bring back the original shine.

In addition to the environment, nearly everything you do from sitting a bag of groceries on the hood, to bumping up against the surface with your coat, keys, or a purse, can cause scratches on your clear coat. Even many car washes, in spite of promoting soft-tech brushes, can leave fine micro-scratches on your paint surface. There is a reason car collectors and exotics owners won't get within a mile of an automated car wash!

Paint Correction is the removal of paint imperfections caused by fine scratches, swirls, holograms, and oxidation that make your car paint cloudy or hazy.

Unlike clay bar, which removes contaminants from the paint, paint correction uses an exquisite abrasive technique to remove a minuscule layer of clear coat - about 1/100th of the thickness of a sheet of typing paper - and then skillfully buffed to a high gloss so the paint can once again shine through.

Beware Inexperienced Detailers!

Ironically, the most common culprit for fine scratches, swirls, and holograms are inexperienced detailers and Do-it-Yourselfers (DIY) who fail to rinse thoroughly, the dirt off the vehicle with a lubricating shampoo before scrubbing. The result is that the dirt itself acts like an abrasive. The use of dirty rags, sponges, and towels when washing and drying, grind the dirt into the clear coat causing even more scratching.

Holograms are deeper than scratches and swirls and are caused almost exclusively by an inexperienced detailer with little or no training in the operation of a over-heated buffer. The result is distortions in the clear coat that are difficult, but not impossible, for paint correction specialists like Bill the Buff Man technicians to get out.
